Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine Principles

Disease and Pattern Diagnosis

  • The focus is to enhance one's health and vitality as well as disease prevention.

  • The herbs prescribed are not just based on symptomatic relief. The purpose is to correct the root cause of disease, and the underlying imbalances.

Pulse diagnosis

Assessment of the whole body

Takes into account all of your symptoms and signs.

  • The intake will include a summary of your body’s systems, your medical and social history, and your diet and lifestyle.

  • This includes pulse taking at the wrist.

  • Tongue diagnosis. We look at whether is it pale, red, cracked, small, large, moist, dry, or does it have no coating, or a thick white or thick yellow coating.

  • Abdominal palpation is also an essential part of the consultation.

  • There also may be palpation of your spine and limbs.

Herbal Combinations

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCHM) makes almost exclusive use of herbal combinations with anywhere from 4 to 20 herbs in a given herbal formula.

It is that TCM herbalists don’t treat symptoms or diseases. They treat entire human beings, including their patterns of symptoms and signs. Herbal medicines are prescribed that fit the pattern discriminations for a particular disease as well those that have been empirically or scientifically proven to improve the condition.

Customized formulations

We begin with a diagnostic principle, known as Bian Zheng Lun Zhi. The goal is to pinpoint imbalances within the body. First establish a disease differentiation (bian bing) and a syndrome differentiation (bian zheng). These imbalances manifest as patterns of disharmony. Therefore, two individuals presenting with the same symptom, such as a headache, may receive different treatments based on their unique underlying diagnoses. Also, two individuals with a different complaint may receive the same treatment based on their pattern diagnosis.

It is natural for your diagnosis to evolve over time, showing improvement with ongoing treatment or fluctuating during periods of stress. To address the root cause of your body’s imbalance effectively, we conduct a comprehensive Chinese Medicine consultation during each visit.

This consultation assesses your overall well-being, extending beyond mere symptomatology. It also explores how lifestyle, emotional, and mental health factors might be influencing your overall health.

Effectiveness and Safety

Herbal Prescriptions

Actions and profiles of herbal medications

TCM has a long history, over thousands of years. This provides the experience and knowledge for effective and safe herbal prescriptions. Furthermore, TCM is always evolving. As a profession, and clinic, we strive to integrate this ancient wisdom with modern research and laboratory science.

To improve all symptoms, prevent and treat later complications, correct imbalance, adjust the immune system and most importantly to boost energy and strengthen the body for better health and quality of life.

• The purpose of herbal therapy is not to replace necessary orthodox medical treatment. A combination of both is often needed.

• We are committed to providing maximally effective herbal formulations with the highest safety profiles.

  • We prescribe high-quality, professional-grade herbal medicines that are available only to qualified licensed professionals.

  • Herbal Extract Granules are mixed with warm water and taken as a tea. They are more powerfully effective and easily absorbed. There is no capsule, coating, or hard tablet to break down.

  • Liquid herbal extracts are tinctures or glycerites. The liquid is added to water or juice. Usually about 1 dropper full is taken 2-3 times per day. These are highly concentrated, convenient, easily absorbed, and will have little to no bitter taste when added to juice or water.

(Herbal Medicines are not covered by health insurance companies & are an out-of-pocket expense.)

• High Quality: All manufactured under stringent quality control Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. With its emphasis on research and insistence on quality and scientific integrity, Sun Ten has earned wide-spread confidence in its production capabilities.”

Safety:

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), or Oriental Medicine is relatively safe because it largely relies on Herbal Medicinal Formulas consisting of four to twenty herbs, rather than single herbs, nutrients or drugs, as in common in Naturopathic and conventional medicine. While the number of total active constituents can thus be very high, the amount of any individual constituent is generally low. This is generally thought to minimize both side-effects and interactions in correctly prescribed formulas.
